Krol Corlett Special Projects was appointed by Liverpool City Council to undertake the careful reconstruction of a collapsed section of historic brickwork within the walled garden at Reynolds Park – a valued public space with significant heritage and horticultural importance.
• Cleaned and stored approximately 20,000 reclaimed bricks on site, carefully removing mortar to ensure reuse.
• Removed all loose and defective brickwork, preparing the site for rebuilding.
• Rebuilt the 3-brick-wide wall using NHL5 lime mortar and washed sand to match the existing historical profile.
• Installed safe access scaffold on both sides of the wall to support the workforce and ensure stability throughout the project.
• Checked the existing foundations, discovering that the wall had originally been constructed on sandstone.
• Reinstated existing sandstone coping stones, replacing any that were damaged with carefully matched alternatives.
Restricted Access: The walled garden is located deep within Reynolds Park, with limited access for vehicles and machinery.
Preservation of Heritage and Horticulture: Careful protection was required to safeguard established plant beds and landscaped areas within the garden, which have evolved over many years.
Community Engagement: The team maintained positive and respectful communication with residents whose homes back onto the wall, ensuring minimal disruption.
Site Sensitivity: As a historically significant space used regularly by local residents for recreation and wellbeing, sensitivity and precision were essential throughout the rebuild.
The response from both the client and the local community has been overwhelmingly positive. The restored wall not only reinforces the structural and visual fabric of the park but also contributes to the lasting enjoyment of its users.
“It’s been great for all the team to constantly receive such positive feedback from the local community that uses the park. The garden provides an escape and pleasure to so many of the local community.”
